Shared Beginnings

Writer / Director / Producer / Sound Design / Editor

Shared Beginnings is an intimate short film built from the fragments of childhood — home footage, sun-washed moments, and the voices of those who shaped us. Through a carefully woven montage of real archival video, paired with narration from my mother and Nonna, the film reflects on growing up alongside my twin brother and the quiet, profound impact of family.

Created as a personal gift and homage to those who raised us, the project is rooted in gratitude, memory, and emotional honesty. I wrote, directed, edited, sound-designed, and produced the film independently, crafting it with the same love and care that inspired it.

Shared Beginnings is a thank you, told through time, tone, and the warmth of old film.

Lost In The Draw

Writer / Director / Co-producer / Marketing / Co-editor

Lost in the Draw follows Leo, a disillusioned office worker whose world is upended by the sudden death of his friend Angus in a kitchen fire. In the wake of tragedy, Leo stumbles upon traces of a forgotten dream — a bizarre lottery where every ticket guarantees a winner. What begins as a quiet grieving process spirals into a surreal journey through grief, chance, and self-discovery.

In the wake of tragedy, Leo stumbles upon traces of a forgotten dream — a bizarre lottery where every ticket guarantees a winner. What begins as a quiet grieving process spirals into a surreal journey through grief, chance, and self-discovery.

I wrote and directed the film as part of my university final project, aiming to push narrative form while maintaining a strong emotional core. Lost in the Draw is about finding something new in the middle of what feels like the end — strange, sad, and maybe even a little hopeful.

DoNotDisturb FM Club Night

Cinematographer / Editor / Colourist

This promo piece for DoNotDisturbFM was shot during one of their signature DJ nights at Stage and Radio, Manchester. Tasked with capturing the electric atmosphere of the event, I focused on intimate crowd moments, organic movement, and the kind of fleeting energy that defines a night out.

Working handheld in a tightly packed venue with unpredictable lighting was both a creative challenge and a central part of the film’s look — gritty, reactive, and immersed in the crowd. As a cinematographer, I leaned into the imperfections and spontaneity of the space, letting the camera move like a guest at the party.

The result is a punchy, visually textured promo piece designed for social content, not just documenting the night, but expressing how it felt to be there.

The Ideas Festival

The Ideas Festival is Manchester Metropolitan University’s annual celebration of innovation and entrepreneurship, spotlighting standout ideas from students and recent graduates across all disciplines. With expert-led workshops, mentorship opportunities, and funding prizes, the festival helps shape early-stage ideas into future ventures.

In 2025, I was selected as a finalist at the Ideas Festival with my creative studio, Steenlight Studios. After progressing through development workshops and mentorship sessions, I had the opportunity to pitch at the grand final alongside other emerging innovators. I was awarded £250 in funding and a year-long mentorship to continue growing the vision behind Steenlight Studios. The experience has been a pivotal moment in shaping the next steps of my creative and business journey.

About

Oliver Steen is a Manchester-based filmmaker drawn to character-driven stories that explore the quiet tensions of everyday life. His work often centres on moments of emotional transition; the subtle shifts in identity, memory, and relationships that shape how people move through the world.

Visually, Oliver’s films favour an intimate and observational approach, often placing the camera close to his characters to capture gesture, silence, and the small details that reveal interior lives. His storytelling leans toward the poetic and personal, using real environments and natural textures to ground emotionally driven narratives.

Having studied filmmaking at Manchester Metropolitan University after earlier training in college, Oliver has developed a multidisciplinary practice working across narrative film, fashion film, and branded visual storytelling. Alongside directing his own work, he regularly collaborates with other filmmakers and production teams in roles such as cinematographer, editor, and assistant director, giving him a broad understanding of the filmmaking process from development through to post-production.

Across his projects, Oliver is interested in how atmosphere, performance, and visual rhythm can combine to create stories that linger beyond the frame. His films aim to feel lived-in and emotionally immediate, capturing characters at moments when something quietly but irreversibly shifts.
